This glorious coast encapsulates Sri Lanka with its sleepy villages sheltering under countless palms, a wonderfully unhurried pace of life, colonial townscapes and local life that revolves around coconut farming, rice cultivation and fishing, particularly stilt-fishing. Factor in countless bays and gorgeous beaches and it's easy to understand why the south coast is such an attractive option for visitors.
Gateway to the south is the charming town of Galle, which has a spectacular setting on the south western tip of Sri Lanka and is home to an atmospheric old port along with some perfectly preserved colonial architecture.
The Palm Jumeirah
The renowned man-made Palm Jumeirah has become one of Dubai's most recognisable landmarks. Luxurious hotels and their amazing leisure attractions are the main draw but, even if you decide not to stay on The Palm, this iconic district is worth a visit for the fine dining restaurants, luxurious spas, beautiful beach clubs and unfettered views of the Gulf.
The Palm Jumeirah sits around a mile north of Dubai Marina and is reached via a causeway from the mainland, and is far and away the largest example of Dubai's desire to transform its unpromising natural environment.
