Escape the fast pace of city life for the province of Kanchanaburi, 150 miles west of Bangkok, for emotive history tropical scenery and soft adventures.
Heavy with history, Kanchanaburi is famed for its World War II museums, memorials and landmarks including the black iron Bridge over the River Kwai and so-called Death Railway, which Japanese soldiers forced Allied prisoners and Asian labourers to build. Although partially destroyed by bombs in 1945, it was rebuilt and is a poignant reminder of WWII horrors.
The interactive Thailand-Burma Railway Centre is an ideal first stop providing a superb overview of the workers plight, whilst the immaculately kept Allied Force War Cemetery, provides a quiet reflective sanctuary.
Fascinating, intoxicating and chaotic, Bangkok deserves at least 48 hours to experience its temples, palaces, markets, malls and street food.
Undoubtedly the city’s must-see landmark is the dazzling Grand Palace complex, a former royal residence now used for ceremonial occasions. Amidst the gold-spired temples, courtyards and manicured gardens is the notable Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the highly revered Emerald Buddha, meticulously carved from jade.
Equally popular with young couples and families, tourists and Thais (including the royal family), Hua Hin’s three miles of attractive powdery sands are flanked by good value hotels, luxury resorts and world-renowned spas. After dark, enjoy some friendly bartering at the vibrant night market, be tempted by the countless food stalls and retreat to a sophisticated wine bar or casual music venue.
While Cha Am may not rival Hua Hin for facilities, it has a long casuarina-lined beach, calm turquoise waters, a laid-back air and is highly regarded for its succulent seafood.
Kui Buri is half an hour’s drive south of Hua Hin and is a peaceful, underdeveloped area home to numerous fishing villages and a gorgeous stretch of virgin beachfront.
