Once little more than mud and marsh, KL, as it’s fondly known, is a fast-rising city effortlessly blending old-world temples, intricate mosques and a colonial past with space-age towers and mega malls. Delightfully compact, it is best explored on foot or via the extensive and excellent public transport network.
KL’s historic core centres around Merdeka Square (Independence Square), which marks the place where the Malaysian flag was first hoisted after independence from British rule in 1957. It is ringed by handsome colonial-era buildings, including the Royal Selangor Club and Sultan Abdul Samad Building while to the west of the square, is the picturesque Perdana Botanical Garden, an ideal spot for some respite away from the hustle and bustle.
The quaint city-state of Malacca may be a modern city but the architectural legacy of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists is plain to see, with forts, museums, churches and towers scattered around the historic quarter, many painstakingly restored.
The tourist area is easily walkable, although colourful trishaws provide a traditional alternative. In the colonial quarter, south of the Melaka River, the major historic sights include Dutch Square, Christ Church, The Stadthuys and the relic of the Portuguese fort A’Famosa.
The Desaru Coast, which lies on Malaysia's south east coast, entices with dreamy white sand beaches, superb resorts and a whole host of activities for all ages. Easily reached from within Malaysia and also Singapore, it's a fabulous option whether you are seeking a relaxing beach break or a fun-filled family holiday.
Attractions include the Adventure Waterpark, beautifully-manicured championship golf courses and a lovely coastline surrounded by lush rainforests and mangroves. In addition, Riverside is a 23-acre waterfront landscaped retail and lifestyle village where you'll find exciting retail outlets, restaurants, cafes and entertainment.
.Founded in 1819 as a tax-free port by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, Singapore is an effortlessly sophisticated city with a dizzying assortment of attractions packed into its characterful districts. Its appeal also springs from its multi-cultural population, a mixture of Chinese, Malay and Indian, which can make a short walk across town feel like a hop from one country to another.
Talking of which, getting around couldn’t be easier thanks to Singapore’s compact size and sleek public transport system, the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), which enables you zip around the city without fuss.
When it comes to seeing and doing, you'll be spoiled for choice.
